One unit of Earth Science investigates the heavenly bodies of our universe (astronomy).  Along with learning about our solar system and the stars beyond, students also learn about special treats God gives us through  phenomena such as the northern lights.  As a result of solar flares from our closest star, the sun, these auroras were captured on film in northern Wisconsin in November of 2004.

Definition

Creation science is conducted by a group of qualified scientists, who, although varied in philosophy and approach, all go about their science with the premise that there is a Divine Creator. Many of these creation scientists hold to the young Earth belief and interpret the Hebrew word "yom" in Genesis 1 as one 24-hour day.  Several creation science groups however believe in an old Earth and either consider the day in Genesis to be so long as to incorporate evolution or simply believe the words of Genesis to be a mere picture or symbol of what actually happened. We would be wise as confessional Lutherans to avoid calling ourselves creation scientists to better distinguish ourselves and not rope ourselves in with a group that has varied beliefs (despite the fact that many do believe what we believe).

Reservations

As you read through some of the mission statements of the groups below, you may recognize they are (for the most part) Christian groups who believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior.  As far as their approach to science, some of them clearly intend to do research in order to show the world an alternate view of origins (CRS).  While one might think this is a noble cause, there is concern for us if we get caught up in research that tries to "prove " the creation account with scientific research.  A Christian could easily fall into the trap of resting the validity of the creation account on science.  We must remember that even the science of Christians is fallible.  What will happen when our science that validates creation fails?

Other dangerous philosophies sneak in such as attempting to find the "true" science that lines up perfectly with Scriptures.  Since even the science of Christians is a human endeavor, it is a mistake to think that a true science exits in a sinful world.  It is also a mistake to treat the Bible as a science book.  As Galileo once said, "The Bible tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go."  God does not give us all the answers we may desire concerning His creation masterpiece.  God has however given us everything we need to know in His infallible Word.  (All Scripture is God-breathed. . .  2 Tim. 3:16; Ecc. 8:16-17) When we fail to just simply say "We don't know," but instead invent theories to better accommodate Biblical truth, we lower ourselves to the evolutionist who tries to invent theories that describe all the complexities in nature. See here  Other examples from an intelligent design page dealing with the complexities the evolutionists theorize about.

Finally it is a mistake to think that if we find some science that lines up perfectly with Scriptures, we will strengthen the weak in faith through this finding or "supplement" their faith. Our faith, given and strengthened in us by the Holy Spirit, ALONE gives us the power to believe the creation account along with everything else in the infallible Scriptures.  And as Romans 10:17 says, "...faith comes from hearing the message" --- not from any science research we do.  Faith then (which makes our natural knowledge more complete) is our proof for creation.  Without it we cannot believe the creation account in the Bible or come to believe it on our own through any investigative science (Heb. 11:3).

Using Human Reason Quotes

With the above reservations in mind and knowing that our faith is not founded or even strengthened with creation science, we can look at possible purposes of creation science for us.

The Purpose of Creation Science for Us

While the Old Earth and Intelligent Design groups below have little to offer us, the Young Earth groups can give us some useful information in a world of science that is dominated by the presupposition that evolution is a fact.  It is easy for us Christians to become frustrated with the museums, textbooks and public instruction that are dominated by the evolutionary assumption that attacks our faith in God and His promises.  Creation science can be helpful in dispelling the notion that evolution is a fact in the face of a world that accepts it as one.  I propose three purposes of creation science for us:

    1.    Talented and qualified creation scientists do well at staying on top of modern evolutionary theories and are apt (more than we) at explaining the bad science behind evolution and finding valid scientific research that refutes the theory of evolution.  In this way creation science educates us in evolutionary theories and shows us how science can be performed properly to refute, on a professional level, a theory that we know, by our God-given  faith, is wrong. (scienec fights science -- as it should)

    2.    Creation science creates a voice for our faith and will possibly (or possibly not) make it easier for our future Christians to take a stand (witness) in the public classroom for their belief in the Genesis creation account without fear of persecution.

    3.    And finally, should the research of creation scientists strongly disprove on a scientific level an aspect of evolutionary theory, doubt could possibly be created in the evolutionist's faith in what he believes.  Which could possibly bring the natural knowledge from its suppressed state to the surface and make the evolutionist more apt to open his ears to the gospel message. (note the "possibly's" emphasized and keep in mind God alone makes this conversion happen through His Word)

With all this in mind we can be scientists who search out and explore to further our knowledge of God's wonderful creation, realizing that we will never perfectly understand His creation until we are one day with Him in heaven.  Please use the resources below with discretion.

Answers in Genesis

In my opinion this is one of the better resources.  Ken Ham is a charismatic speaker with a great Aussie accent.  Ken's main thrust is "the evidence is the same but the interpretation is different"   He still doesn't answer what our proof for creation really is -- our answer: FAITH , plain and simple  (by the way, the hesitation by many to simply say, faith, is a result of believing that they can accept or come to believe on their own--decision theology). One has to be a little careful not to get carried away with his fun "rips" on evolutionary science since these can imply that no one who believes in evolution does good science.  A creation scientist's science is equally fallible.  Check this site for an example of how putting too much stock in creation science can be dangerous:  The Paluxy Fossils

Old Earth  (an article defending why the Genesis day has to be longer) -- We respectfully disagree.  The old Earth group of creation scientists is an example of what happens when one commingles science with Scripture.  Human reason falls short in trying to explain God's miraculous creation.

Reasons to Believe (Progressive Creationism  - long days incorporated in creation -- described by some as a supernaturally punctuated evolution where God "steps in" to create particular organisms at particular timesAnswers in Creation interestingly this site does make one okay point "The doctrine of salvation has nothing to do with the age of the earth."

List of other types and groups  (many enter the realm of theistic evolution -- meaning God created a universe that developed life through evolution, a hands-off approach by God)

Intelligent Design (a.k.a. I.D. --  If you believe in creation it's already understood you believe in intelligent design -- on top of that, our natural knowledge can't refute an Intelligent Designer exists.  However, ID can mean anything from the Triune God to aliens from another planet. This is a hot topic right now and will probably continue to be so for the next few years.)
